Research Plan:
Taking my work of 6 years as a dancer with Russell Dumas’ Dance Exchange as a point of departure, I will investigate systems/structures and tasks as a means of organising movement and as a consequence, my own dancing. These systems will take the place of a rigid or ‘set’ choreography, and are intended as a challenge to navigate physical tasks and compositional concerns in real-time, in performance. The research will also investigate what effect this has on the audience, as the dancer’s decision-making is made apparent.
Movement Lab:
The dancers' job is often to serve the choreography. But what if the dancers have the freedom to choose? What if there are forks in the road of this dance, a choreographic choose-your-own-adventure, where individual decisions have an impact on the whole? In this Lab, we will explore the exciting place in-between improvisation and ‘set’ choreography where no two performances can be the same.
David Huggins began dancing while completing his psychology degree in New Zealand at the University of Canterbury. This new direction took him to Melbourne, where he attended the National Theatre Ballet School. He then completed his degree in dance at the Victorian College of the Arts, Melbourne University in 2010.
After graduating, David was invited by New Zealand choreographer Douglas Wright to perform a soloist role in RAPT for the Auckland Arts Festival 2011. Since then, David has been working consistently with Russell Dumas’ Dance Exchange in Melbourne, performing the work both internationally (USA, Finland, NZ, France) and nationally (Melbourne, Sydney). As a conclusion to a 3 month international tour and intensive period, David produced the work of Dance Exchange in the Body Festival, Christchurch, where the work was well received. David worked with French choreographer Xavier Le Roy’s Temporary Title, 2015 at Carriageworks, Sydney, a new
commission by Kaldor Public Art Projects.

Research Exchange provides space for our artists to develop ideas and methodologies outside of a commission, performance or institutional framework. In turn, this research is shared with the wider community through Movement Labs, online platforms and open Research Performances.

The Research Exchange requires the artists to:
- Write a weekly blog, including an initial video blog outlining their intentions;
- Facilitate ten hours of Movement Labs, an incubator-style research space to investigate (weekly in Auckland through Independance and one full-day per series in Christchurch);
- Present a Research Performance, an open performance to share research with the community;
- Meet for ten hours over the series with their Research Advisor (appointed by the artist).
In return, MAP provides the artists with:
- $200.00 weekly stipend for the artist;
- $500.00 stipend for Research Advisor (ten hours of contact time);
- A venue for the Research Day & Research Performance;
- Marketing of events including promotion, platforms for engagement and communication throughout the series.
